To all my friends at WAO, I wanted to say thank you for making my trip to Colorado an unforgettable experience! I can’t wait to return and raft with you guys again.

We had a great time. Thank you for your hospitality. Everyone was very professional and friendly; a difficult “mix” to accomplish. Dave was one of the best guides I have ever met.

Free Campgrounds

Royal Gorge Park

This park is also known as the "Overlook". This is a huge park and camping is free but there is no water so prepare for that. This camping area can accomodate large groups and is ideal for Scouts and church groups on a budget. There are big sites with restrooms, pavillions, fire pits and picnic tables. This camping area is part of the Royal Gorge Park. From Canon City go west on Hwy 50 about 8 miles to County Road 3A (The turnoff to the Royal Gorge). Proceed about a mile or so on 3A; Watch for the sign on your left.

Red Canyon Park

This area is just south of Garden Park; Many dinosaur fossils have been found here, including some that are in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. A bit further up this road will lead you to "Shelf Road" - a popular rock climbing area. The road ultimately goes all the way to the historic mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek. Keep in mind that if you choose to venture much beyond Red Canyon Park this is a real 4X4 road that is not suitable for anything large - like an RV or 5th wheel - or anything other than a 4 wheel drive vehicle. To get to Red Canyon Park from Hwy 50 in Canon City - Turn north on 15th street and proceed to Central. Right (east) on Central and proceed to Field Avenue. Turn left on Field so you are going North out of town. This road will bring you to Red Canyon Park. Camping is free but there is no water so be sure to prepare for that. There is a vault restroom and a couple of pavillions with fire pits.

Temple Canyon

This area has some good spots along Grape Creek. It is south of Canon City about 6 miles. Roughly 10-15 minutes from our office. Very rustic and the only water is Grape Creek which is NOT drinking water so prepare for that. The road that runs through here eventually ends up near Parkdale at the entrance to the South Rim of the Royal Gorge Park. From Hwy 50 on the west end of Canon City - Go south on First street and proceed about a mile and bear to the right on County Road 3 which becomes Temple Canyon Road - follow the signs.
